Keeping Alocasias Happy

What is an Alocasia?

Alocasias, also known as Elephant’s Ear, are native to the tropical rainforests of South-East Asia. There are 79 known species and they have been cultivated for over 28,000 years! Alocasia first became popular as a houseplant in the 1950’s and their popularity has only increased since.

How to care for your Alocasia

Alocasias are considered perennials. They will go through a dormant stage if not kept in warm and humid environments year round. To keep your Alocasia looking healthy all year, follow these simple steps listed below:

  • Use MaestroGro’s Rose Glo 6-8-4. This product gives the plant its needed Nitrogen for leaf production and Phosphorus for root development. Apply this product monthly all year round for optimal results.
  • Liquid Seaweed helps to fortify the foliage. Spray leaves twice a month for leaf longevity.
  • Hasta Gro is a product that will boost leaf production. Apply with every other watering during the heavy growing seasons (spring and summer) for optimal results. Stop use during the slow growing seasons.

Lighting and humidity requirements

Alocasias require lots of bright light to thrive! They can handle some direct light, but too much can end up burning the leaves. It is important to remember that they do not like drastic environmental changes. During the colder months, keep them away from drafts, cold windows, and dryer areas to keep them from going dormant.

Alocasias and pests

Alocasias are prone to spider mites. Keeping them from getting too dry (especially in the winter) will help prevent these annoying mites from appearing. We suggest spraying neem on your plant 2-3 times a month as a pest preventative. Neem not only works as an immediate insecticide, using it regularly actually works to prevent future infestations.

Fun Fact

Everyone knows the story of Jack and the Beanstalk. But did you know that the beanstalk is actually based off an Alocasia? Certain varieties of Alocasia can grow up to 15 feet tall with leaves reaching 3 – 4 feet in length. Standing under one of these can certainly make one feel like they could climb above the clouds!
